Up on the Cambria plateau, Nicktown sits high and open, where the steeple is visible across the fields and the wind has nothing at all to slow it. Snow here is measured in feet and moved in shifts, drifting back over a lane an hour after it was cut. Lieb Excavating plows those farm drives and turnarounds, pushing the banks far enough back to leave room for the next storm, because there is always a next storm. Walks get shoveled and treated, entrances get widened, and the work carries on into the dark with the headlights full of falling flakes. When the sky finally clears off toward Carrolltown, the drives are wide, the edges are square, and the whole white plateau looks the way it ought to.
