The West Branch of the Brandywine runs low and green through Newlin, and on summer mornings the fog lifts off it in sheets before the first mower turns a wheel. Hetrick landscaping cuts the lawns on those creek-side properties in long, straight passes, with the fencelines trimmed and the border set as sharp as a drawn line. Grass comes on fast in this valley once June arrives, so the work is a rhythm rather than a chore — back each week, ahead of the growth instead of chasing it. By late October the maples along the river road let go all at once, and the leaf hauling becomes the whole day, until the turf can breathe again. What is left behind fits the place: an even, unhurried lawn on one of Newlin's stone lanes.
