About Schafer's Outdoor Services llc

At four in the morning in January, the Allegheny lies black and unhurried below New Kensington, and the hills on the Westmoreland side hold their snow like something set aside for later. Schafer's Outdoor Services llc is out in that hour with the plow, opening driveways down on the river flats and up the steep grades off Freeport Road so the first car of the day leaves clean tracks and nothing else. Salt goes down where the shade keeps a walk slick past noon. Come June the same ground turns green and fast, and the work becomes mowing, trimming, edging — a line cut along a sidewalk that stays straight all the way to the corner. There is a particular satisfaction in a drive cleared before anyone wakes, and in a lawn finished before the heat comes up off the pavement.
