There is an October morning in Solebury when frost sits on the old field walls until nine o'clock and the hedgerows turn rust and copper overnight. When the first storm climbs the river valley, the mowers come off the trailer and the plow goes on, and the measure of a good night's work is a driveway opened to the gravel and a front walk you can cross in ordinary shoes. Snow here can be wet and heavy one week and fine as flour the next, and neither kind gets to decide when a family leaves for work. The rounds run through New Hope and out along the ridge roads.
