Out where New Britain Township meets the Chalfont line the land opens wide, and snow that falls there rarely stays put — the wind walks it across the fields and piles it exactly where a driveway meets the road. Yardie's goes after that: plowing drives and lots, cutting through the drift built up at the end of the apron, opening walkways and steps, and laying salt where ice sets up hard overnight. On a long night the route runs twice, because a lane cleared at midnight is not necessarily a lane at five. Getting there before the sky turns grey is the point of the whole operation. A township that can get out of its own driveways gets to have an ordinary day.
