Crater Services

About Crater Services

Four in the morning in Middletown, and the streets between Emaus and Union are still blue with dark. Crater Services is out ahead of the town, throwing plow-light across driveways that were white an hour ago and won't be by breakfast. Snow comes up the Susquehanna here with a river's patience, filling the low ground near Swatara Creek and stacking against garage doors overnight. The work is plowing, clearing lots, shoveling the walks down to bare concrete, and salting the corners that glaze over when the wind turns. There's a plain pleasure in a drive that's already open when the porch light comes on.
