The first true storm usually finds the township in December, laying wet snow over the mountain laurel above Winona Falls until the whole hillside bends with it. Gerhold Tree and Landscaping turns to snow work then — plowing driveways, opening private lanes, shoveling steps and walkways, and treating the ice that follows a thaw. Up here a storm is never uniform: the top of a road can be white while the bottom is only rain, and the route has to be read before it can be run. The work is that reading, plus getting to each place in the right order. By the time the sun comes up the lanes are open and the day can start.
