October in Linglestown arrives the color of cider, maples going over the village square, the gazebo standing in a drift of leaves, the light slanting low by four o'clock. Woodrow Landscaping spends that stretch of the year on fall cleanups across Lower Paxton Township, leaves pulled off lawns and out of the beds, the last mowing taken low, borders cut back ahead of the frost. Earlier in the season it is weekly mowing and string trimming, keeping the yards along Linglestown Road even and tidy through a humid Dauphin County summer. Then the ridge north of town goes white, and the work becomes snow, driveways plowed open, walks cleared, de-icer down on the front steps. By the time the school buses come around, the yards look tended and the pavement is bare.
