Before dawn on a January morning, the Juniata River smokes in the cold at Lewistown and Jacks Mountain stands pale against a dark sky. Matt’s Excavating is already out in it, plowing out drives so Lewistown can get moving once the sun clears the ridges. Snow that blows in off the river and piles against the curbs gets pushed into tall banks well back from the drive. There is pride in that first look at daylight, a clean black lane where a white wall stood a few hours earlier. In a river town, that cleared lane is how the day begins.
