About D. A. Baker Land Services

Fog gathers over the Yellow Breeches on cold nights and leaves the low roads glazed by four in the morning, long before anyone thinks to look. D. A. Baker Land Services works ahead of that hour — plowing farm lanes and driveways across the township, clearing lot entrances, cutting walks and doorsteps down by shovel, and salting the shaded stretches the sun will not touch until noon. Winter in this valley is more freeze-and-thaw than blizzard, which makes ice, not depth, the real work. Farm drives run long here and wind across open ground can undo an early pass, so some mornings mean coming back through a second time. The point of all of it is that the day starts ordinarily for everyone else: the car backs out, the mail comes, the walk is bare.
