On a February night the road out past Hunsecker's Mill is one of the darkest places in the county, the covered bridge black against the snow and the Conestoga running underneath it without a sound. Jim Long Landshapers is on the move at that hour — plowing driveways, cutting walks open, dropping salt on the low spots where creek air settles and freezes hardest. Bottomland cold is its own animal; a drive near the water can glaze over while the same drive up on the ridge stays merely wet. The pleasure of it is arriving before anyone stirs and leaving nothing but clean pavement and a set of headlights going away up the lane. By breakfast the storm is a rumor and the driveway is just a driveway again.
