Selden Stone Co.

About Selden Stone Co.

Shale ledges step down toward the Delaware here, gray and layered, and in deep winter the seeps on the rock face freeze into columns. Selden Stone Co. spends those months on snow removal — plowing driveways and lots, cutting walks down to the surface, treating the shaded pitches where ice keeps its grip longest. A clear cold night after a storm turns the whole valley hard and quiet, and the trucks go back out to check the drives that always glaze over. Getting a stone walk swept and gritted so it can be crossed in ordinary shoes is a small thing that changes somebody's whole day. Winter work in Lackawaxen Township, where the rock decides where the water goes.
