Masthope Mountain rises off the Delaware in switchbacks, and the drives up there test a year in both directions. Forrest's Landscaping mows the summer half — cutting, trimming and edging the clearings people carved out of the hardwoods — and plows the winter half, opening those same switchbacks before the ice can set. Up on the shoulder of the mountain the snow can lie four inches deeper than it does down at the river, which is worth remembering around four in the morning. Autumn falls in between, leaf after leaf hauled off the lawns until the ground shows again. Nothing about this ground lets you coast, in either season.
