By mid-October the silver maples along the Susquehanna levee let go all at once, and half the lawns in Kingston are buried in gold overnight. Bare Knuckle Landscaping meets that head-on — mowing while there is still growth in the turf, then pulling the leaves off beds and grass until a lawn can breathe its way into winter. It is unglamorous work done with the hands and the shoulders, and it leaves a yard looking swept rather than merely cleared. The last cut of the year, taken low and even, is a small pleasure the whole street can see from the sidewalk. From spring into late fall the routes cover Kingston, Edwardsville and the towns at the river's edge.
