Kersey sits high on the Allegheny plateau, where winter runs long and the green season is short and unreasonably generous when it finally arrives. Spring Green works that narrow window, mowing and trimming lawns carved out of hemlock and hardwood and edging along drives the frost heaves every April. Up here a lawn is a clearing in big country — elk drift along the field edges at dusk, and fog off the Bennett's Branch valley sits in the low ground until mid-morning. The care runs to feeding thin, stony soil, keeping weeds from taking the open spots, and clearing leaf fall before the first real snow buries all of it. There is a particular pride in one crisp mown edge held against all that forest.
