In Hyndman the freight trains keep their own clock, rumbling through the narrow Wills Creek valley at every hour, and on a storm night their headlights cut through falling snow like lanterns. Shaffer Construction works that same dark stretch, clearing driveways and back lanes until the town wakes to open ground. Wills Creek runs black and quick between snowy banks while the plow blade finds the pavement beneath the drifts. Each pass laid straight and wide is its own small victory: a turnaround scraped clean, a path to the door that holds when the next squall slips over the ridge. When Hyndman's first coffee pots start up, the drive is already clear.
