Fort Washington keeps its old trees, and old trees make hard lawns — deep shade under the oaks, roots humping through the turf, grass that grows in patches and moods. lawn Cut Team knows those yards: the stone-walled properties off Bethlehem Pike, the shaded slopes below Militia Hill, the flat green backyards running toward the Wissahickon. Mowing here is a matter of height and patience, and trimming is a matter of the hundred small places a mower cannot reach — around the beds, the posts, the foot of every trunk. When the oaks finally let go in late November the cleanup is a real job, and finishing it feels like one. A cleared, edged lawn under bare branches is its own kind of handsome.
