Winter comes down the Susquehanna with the wind behind it, and Fairview Township — strung along the west shore below New Cumberland — takes the whole of it. Susquehanna Landscape Center works the early side of those mornings, plowing driveways and lots and clearing walkways while the river is still black and the valley still asleep. The satisfaction is specific: a drive opened before dawn, grey first light on clean blacktop, a car backing out without a shovel ever leaving the garage. Storms here come off the ridges and pool in the low ground along the creeks, so the same street can need two visits before the buses run. Getting people out on time is the entire job, and on the west shore that means starting hours before anybody notices you were there.
