Fairfield's Main Street runs west out of Adams County toward the gap, and when a storm crosses Jack's Mountain the borough gets its share while the farm lanes get considerably more. Cemco Construction takes the plow across both — the town driveways first, worked in tight against old stone and brick, then the long gravel approaches out among the orchards toward Toms Creek. On gravel the blade rides a hair high so the stone stays where it belongs and the drive is still a drive come April. Aprons and walks are cleared and treated where ice sets in the shade of a north-facing wall and refuses to leave. There is a plain pleasure in finishing a route at first light with every stop on it opened.
