Lake-effect snow travels a long way south from Erie before it finds the Connoquenessing valley, and when it does it comes in bands that can bury a parking lot between one hour and the next. John D'angelo Excavating turns to snow work in those months: plowing, pushing banks back, opening lots and lanes and long rural driveways, and hauling off what there is no room left to stack. The trucks go out in the dark, and the measure of the night is simple — whether the first car in can park without giving it a thought. By sunrise the pavement is black and the piles sit squared off at the far edge. That is the whole job, and it is worth doing well.
