High on the Allegheny Plateau, not far from where Interstate 80 reaches its highest ground east of the Mississippi, DuBois gets its winter early and keeps it late. Some nights the snow comes sideways across the plateau, filling the low ground along Sandy Lick Creek and burying the drives that climb the city's hillside streets. Reed Brothers head out into it with plows and shovels and a single aim: open the way. By the time the kitchens of DuBois are brewing coffee, driveways have been pushed back to their edges and walks scraped down to concrete. There is real pride in that hour — the plateau silent under its new white, and every path the brothers have touched lying open.
