About Chaffee Excavating Inc

Winter arrives in western Beaver County on a west wind with nothing standing in front of it, and the snow that gets to Darlington has been travelling all night to do it. Chaffee Excavating Inc works the middle of that — plowing lots and drives, clearing walkways, spreading salt where wind-packed drift has gone to ice. Open-field snow refills what was just cleared, so the job is really about coming back, and coming back again, until the wind gives up. There is an odd calm in it: headlights, a straight windrow thrown to the shoulder, everything behind you black and passable. Darlington, Darlington Township, Enon Valley, Cannelton and the roads toward the state line.
