Alfonso & Son

About Alfonso & Son

Crafton climbs the hills just west of Pittsburgh in steep streets of brick homes and old shade trees, the kind of borough where front porches still face the sidewalk. Alfonso & Son tends lawns here, where a yard may be a tilted slope between curb and porch steps or a narrow strip out back facing the alley. Those small uphill lawns ask for patience and a steady hand, and they reward it: a neat line along the stone retaining wall, a level-looking cut on a grade that wants to slide out from underfoot. In early autumn, when the maples along Crafton's streets begin to turn, a freshly mowed yard sets off the old brick like a frame. It is neighborly work, done hillside by hillside.
