A Little Pick Me Up

About A Little Pick Me Up

Lake Erie ships its winter inland, and by the time the clouds cross into Mercer County they are letting go over the fields of West Salem Township in long grey bands. A Little Pick Me Up runs snow removal through those weeks, plowing driveways and farm lanes, opening turnarounds, clearing walks and putting de-icer where the wind polishes a slope into glass. Lake-effect does not arrive politely or on schedule; it can drop three inches while the radar shows nothing much, so the truck goes out on what the sky is doing rather than what was forecast. Along the Shenango flats there is little to break the drifting, and a lane cleared at four can want another pass by seven. Getting somebody out to Greenville on time in February is the entire point of the work.
