About D.H. Funk & Sons LLC

Winter arrives in Columbia off the water first, a grey shelf of cold sliding up the Susquehanna until the lamps on the Veterans Memorial Bridge wear halos. D.H. Funk & Sons LLC works the hours nobody else wants — plowing while Locust Street is still blue, salting the brick-lined drives of the old river town before the first engine turns over. There is a particular satisfaction in a lot opened wide and square, curbs showing, the pile stacked where it won't drift back across the pavement. Snow here can come sideways off the water or fall straight and patient all night, and either way the job is the same: make the morning possible. By the time Columbia stirs, the blacktop is dark and wet and ready.
