The first real snow of December softens the stone arches of the Perkiomen Bridge until Main Street looks a century older than it is. J & V Lawn Service is out under that sky, plowing driveways, opening lots, clearing walkways and spreading salt and ice melt where the cold digs in hardest. Storms arrive at inconvenient hours around here, so the schedule bends to the weather instead of the other way around. Where a plow cannot reach, at the steps, the stoop, the path to a side door, the shovel finishes the job. A drive cleared before sunrise is a quiet kind of gift, and it is the reason for the early start.
