Long farm lanes in Chestnuthill township drift shut first — wide open ground, wind coming across the fields, a foot of snow piling three deep where the lane meets the road. VPI Excavation clears them, plowing driveways and lanes and opening the walkways after a storm has passed. Big ground needs equipment that can take it and a plan for where all that snow is going to sit until April. First light comes up over the Blue Mountain ridgeline to the south and the lane runs clean and dark the whole way to the barn. Some mornings that is the most satisfying thing you'll see all week.
