Castanea Township tucks in between Bald Eagle Mountain and the West Branch of the Susquehanna, just past Lock Haven, and the ridge decides what sort of day everybody gets. Summer is river-bottom soil and grass that answers back — mowing, trimming, edging and the seasonal cleanups that keep a place looking tended. Winter comes down the valley out of the northwest, and the mountain's shadow means a driveway can hold ice long after the road has dried; plowing, walkway clearing and salting settle that. There's a genuine pleasure in a cleared drive at dawn with the ridge just going pink above it. Lock Haven, Flemington and Mill Hall are all the same short run down the valley.
