Late October, the ridge above Carnegie goes rust and copper, and the leaves start travelling downhill in drifts along the curbs. Cleanup season is the hinge of the whole year here — mowing tapering off, yards cleared and edged, everything put right before the ground stiffens. The first plowable storm usually arrives on a night wind, and then it's driveways, lots and walkways, with salt on the steep spots. Two trades, one property list, one town folded into the crook of the creek. Long light in autumn, headlights on white in winter — both are good hours to be out working.
