Bushkill is hemlock country — steep ravines, water falling somewhere just out of sight, and the Delaware moving slow below it all. Stans Lawn Care works both ends of the Pocono year: mowing and trimming the clearings people carved out of that forest, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the mountain snow starts stacking along 209. Under hemlock the ground stays dark and cool, so the grass grows thin and slow and the ice hangs on for weeks after the valley has let go of it. A drive up here can need clearing three times in one storm, and once more for the ridge the town plow leaves at the road. When it is open, it is open — and the woods go back to being quiet.
