April in Burrell Township is mostly waiting — ground too soft one week, grass suddenly ankle-high the next. Monte Homes makes the first cuts of the year on the lanes running out toward Blairsville, taking the winter's matting off, pulling the last leaf litter out of the beds and fence rows, keeping the deck high until the turf has its feet under it. That opening mow is the one that quietly decides how the rest of the summer will look. There is a smell to it everybody knows and nobody can name. After that it settles into a steady week-by-week, straight through to the fall.
