Athens sits on the point where the Chemung meets the Susquehanna, and in spring you can read last month's high water on the silver maples like a pencil line on a doorframe. River flats grow enormous trees in a hurry, and that size carries right up to the edge of the yards and the roofs of the old Valley houses. Removal here is sized to the space — sectioned down over a garage, rigged away from a fence, hauled out clean. Trimming and pruning keep limbs off the eaves and cut the sail area before a line of summer storms comes down the valley. When the wind has already had its say, cleanup clears the yard, the drive and the fence line and gives the place back.
