Where Annville gives out into open limestone farmland the wind has nothing to slow it, and two inches can drift a lane shut twice in one night. Pat & Son Service Center plows through that — lanes and driveways cleared end to end, turnarounds opened out, and a return pass when the drift rebuilds itself. Doorways get dug out, steps scraped, grit spread where boots land. Some mornings the whole valley is visible from the seat of the truck, blue-white and perfectly still, with one black line cut through it. That line is the point of the entire night.
