On a snow night Main Street in Annville goes quiet the way it never does otherwise — one set of tracks, storefronts dark, everything muffled. Long's Excavation works that shift: lots and driveways cleared, aprons cut back to the curb line so the street plow does not wall anybody in, storefront walks shoveled and salted by hand. Ice is treated before the morning refreeze can turn a sidewalk into glass. By the time the first cars come through on 422 the pavement is open and the piles are stacked out of the sightlines. Work done in the dark and noticed only because nothing goes wrong — there is something satisfying in that.
