When a squall crosses the valley in January, the same lanes want plowing — driveways pushed back to full width, walkways shoveled, salt down where the shade keeps the ice. Wind is the local complication: an open field can rebuild a drift across a cleared lane in twenty minutes, so a route is seldom finished on the first pass. Either season the measure is the same — a place that looks tended and is easy to get in and out of.
