Mid-May on the hill near Mansion Park, the lilacs come out and the whole slope smells like it for a week, and the grass grows faster than anyone can keep up with. J&M Landscaping meets it head-on: cutting often enough that the lawn never gets ahead, trimming close to walls and stone steps, edging so the drive keeps a firm border against all that growth. Beds get their lines cut back and cleared of what the spring pushed up. Altoona's terraced yards make for short passes and plenty of turns, which is simply how the work goes here. By June the lawns look even and settled, which is the whole reason for showing up in May.
