North of town, Abiqua Creek drops out of the basalt in a cold green rush, and Silverton has always taken its shape from water like that — creek first, then orchard, then the long flat gardens of the valley floor. Abiqua Landscape Products keeps lawns on that same running order: mowed on a set rotation, trimmed tight along fence lines and foundations, clippings gathered instead of left to mat down in the rain. Spring comes wet and unhurried here, and the grass answers by growing faster than anybody plans for, so the work is in returning steadily rather than rescuing a yard once in May. There is a plain satisfaction in the final pass of the first cut, when a lawn that went shaggy under February drizzle stands level again from the porch steps clear back to the fence. The route runs through Silverton and the country around it — Mount Angel, Scotts Mills, Sublimity and up into the Silverton Hills.
