Beneath the St. Johns Bridge the piers rise like nave arches, and by mid-October the rain has come back to Cathedral Park for good. Green Oregon Landscape LLC works the peninsula through that turn — the last mows of the year, edges cut clean, leaves lifted off the grass before they mat and yellow it. The wet season is when moss control, dethatching and aeration earn their keep in north Portland's heavy soil, with overseeding right behind so the lawn comes up thick in spring. Warmer months run to mowing, trimming, fertilizing and keeping weeds out of the beds. From the bluff the river slides slate-gray toward the Columbia, and the yards along it stay green nearly all year, which is rather the point.
