October along the Grande Ronde River turns the cottonwoods at Riverside Park a loud yellow, and within a week or two half of it is lying on the lawns of La Grande. Clearing that is its own kind of tidy pleasure: rake, blow, haul, and watch the turf come back into view green and awake underneath. The rest of the season is simpler — mowing on schedule, trimming the strip along the fence line that a mower can never quite reach, keeping walk edges from disappearing under creeping grass. Winter arrives early and hard in Union County, so the last cleanup of the fall counts for more here than it might elsewhere; a yard put away right in November is a yard that wakes up well in April. That is the whole aim, every visit: leave each place looking like someone paid attention.
