January sends the east wind down the Columbia Gorge into Gresham hard and cold, and it leaves the yards littered with fir limbs, needles and whatever else the storm carried in. Ground Control Lawn Care takes the dormant months seriously: storm debris cleared out, missed leaves hauled away, moss dealt with where the shade keeps the ground damp, beds cut back and the soil made ready. Then February softens, the first mow of the year comes early in this valley, and the round starts up again with edging, trimming and weekly cuts. Winter work is the reason the spring lawn is possible at all. Most people only ever see the second half of that.
