Rain is the working condition in Gaston, not the exception. The valley floor holds it, the Coast Range foothills wring more out of every westbound cloud, and by April the grass around Wapato Lake is growing faster than anyone can keep up with alone. Patton Valley Landscape keeps up with it — weekly mowing on ground that never fully dries, edges recut along drives and walkways, trimming close around fence posts, hazelnut trunks and mailbox stands. Weeds come out of the beds before they can take advantage of all that water, and the beds get their outlines back. On the afternoons when the sky finally opens over the valley, a cared-for lawn out here is about the greenest thing in Oregon, and that is worth the wet boots.
