About Shawna Mathis THE YARDIST

East of Baker City the ground climbs to Flagstaff Hill, where wagon ruts still show in the bunchgrass and the sky carries on for a hundred miles without interruption. Against that much open country a tended yard reads like punctuation, and that is the pleasure of the job for Shawna Mathis THE YARDIST. Mowing, edging, trimming and seasonal cleanup, done in an order that leaves the walks swept and the lines straight before the truck pulls away. High-desert grass rewards patience — it comes back thick when it is cut at the right height rather than scalped. In Baker City and the small towns around it, that patience shows up as a yard you can pick out from the corner.
