Late-summer afternoons in Watonga come with a south wind that never quite quits, rattling the cottonwoods down along the North Canadian. Jacky's Lawn & Lube mows into it anyway — grass cut, walks trimmed, edges cleaned on the streets running off the courthouse square. In this much open country a mowed lawn is a piece of shade and order somebody chose to make, and it takes keeping up. Bermuda under that wind loses moisture fast, so the cut gets set high enough to shelter its own roots. The mower cools while the last trimming gets finished, and then the yard is quiet and even and ready for evening.
