Shaw's Lawn Service starts when it lifts, running the mowers through Fairmont, Hayward and the neighborhoods along Enid's south edge. A lawn out here contends with heat, wind and hard red clay, so the cut is set high enough to shade its own roots and the pattern changes week to week to keep the grass standing up. Trimming closes the gaps the deck leaves; edging hands the sidewalk back its line. It is unglamorous work, and by mid-morning a whole block smells like it.
