Slick is a small grid of streets in southern Creek County, close enough to the Deep Fork bottoms that morning fog stays in the low places until the sun clears the sandstone rise. Nick's Lawn Care and Landscaping mows in town and out along the section roads toward Bristow and Kellyville, where a yard often ends where the pasture begins and somebody has to decide exactly where that line falls. It gets drawn clean here — cut to the edge, trimmed around the posts and the propane tank, clippings swept back off the gravel. Bermuda in this country will put on a foot in a rainy week and then quit cold in August, so the schedule bends toward the weather instead of the calendar. The result is small and it is real: a tidy square of green holding its own against a lot of open ground.
