North of Durant the Bryan County country rolls in long, low waves of pasture, and the Blue River runs cold and clear through the timber on the eastern side. Brother's Construction & Lawn Care is out on those roads in spring, mowing lawns just coming out of dormancy, edging drives back to their original lines, trimming fence rows and around outbuildings, and hauling off the winter's fallen limbs. Red gravel dust hangs in the morning air behind every truck out here, and a mown lawn against that red ground looks twice as green. The season builds from a first cut in March to a weekly rhythm by June. A place cut clean in this country can be seen from a quarter mile off, and it says something.
