By late August the heat settles into Madill early and stays, and the shadow of the courthouse on the square is the coolest thing downtown until evening. Martin's Lawn Care works around that heat, cutting in the first hours and again as the day lets go, holding lawns to a schedule so the bermuda never gets ahead of the blade. Mowing, edging, trimming along fences and foundations, sweeping the clippings from the drive: the list is short and the standard is not. South of town the land tips toward Texoma and the yards catch a lake breeze at dusk, which makes the final stop of the day the one worth waiting for. A lawn cut clean in that light looks like the whole town at its ease.
