Late fall along Elk Creek smells like cut wheat and cold dirt, and by then the mowing has slowed to a last pass or two before the bermudagrass goes tan for the winter. Hobart Stockyard handles that turn of the year for yards around town — final cuts, leaves hauled out of the corners where the wind stacks them, and edges recut so the shape holds until spring green-up. Through the growing months it is a straightforward weekly rhythm: mow, trim the fence rows and posts, edge the walks, blow the clippings clear. Dormant season in this part of Oklahoma has its own beauty, all straw-gold and long shadow, and a lawn that was tended looks intentional even asleep. Come March those same yards wake up ahead of the neglected ones, which is the whole point of the fall work.
