Along the north line of McClain County the Canadian River lies wide and shallow, more sand than water, with cottonwoods leaning over the bars. On a windy afternoon that sand travels, and the yards nearby wear a fine coat of it by supper. Brothers Outdoor Services cuts those lawns to one height, trims the fence corners and tree bases, edges the walks, and takes the grit and clippings off the drive before pulling out. It is good ground to work — river-bottom soil, Bermuda that runs fast wherever the sand holds water. Purcell, Wayne and the roads between all fall on the same round.
