Fog sits low on the Red River bottom below Colbert most mornings in May, and the sod fields come out of it in long flat panels of green, one cut line running to the next. Brigman's Sod Farm grows turf in the sandy loam the river laid down here, and the whole calendar is grass — mowing the fields down to an even height, harvesting, and setting sod onto ground somebody wants living by the weekend. A new lawn laid in Bryan County heat is a promise you have to keep with water and timing, and the seams knit tighter when the rolls go down fresh. There is a plain pleasure in standing at the end of a finished yard where bare dirt was that morning. From the farm the work reaches out across Colbert and the towns along the river.
